I-5 Corridor Improvements Between Orange County Line to the I-605

April 21, 2017

Week of April 23, 2017

FLORENCE AVENUE INTERCHANGE PROJECT

Pile driving activity will be ongoing intermittently for approximately six weeks. Pile driving activity will take place weekdays between 7 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Crews will begin this work along northbound I-5, then will move across the freeway to complete work along southbound I-5. While pile driving activity will only be performed during the day, night crews may move equipment to reposition the pile driving rig within the work area. Please be advised this work may be loud and disruptive due to equipment noise, construction lighting (when equipment is moved at night), and vibration and pounding related to pile driving activity.

The week of April 23 crews will be working at night in the center median of the freeway constructing the bridge column forms. Lanes on northbound I-5 at Florence Avenue will be reduced, Tuesday night, April 25 through Thursday night, April 27 between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m., as crews work in the center median. At least one lane on northbound I-5 will remain open, while this work is conducted.

IMPERIAL HIGHWAY & PIONEER BOULEVARD PROJECT

On Monday, April 24 crews will resume pile driving activity along I-5 at Pioneer Boulevard; this work will be conducted weekdays between 7 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. and will be ongoing intermittently for approximately three months. Please be advised this work may be loud and disruptive due to equipment noise, vibration, and pounding related to pile driving activity.

On Sunday night, April 23 and Monday night, April 24, crews plan to perform a traffic shift along northbound I-5. Lanes will be realigned from the outside portion of the freeway, onto the newly constructed center lanes. This traffic shift will allow crews to demolish the old Pioneer Boulevard, San Antonio and Imperial bridges at I-5. This work will require nighttime full closure of northbound I-5 as well as the permanent closure of the northbound I-5 on-ramp at Norwalk Boulevard.

The following full freeway closures, connector closure and ramp closures are scheduled next week as part of this traffic shift:

  • Northbound I-5 closed from Norwalk Blvd. to I-605 from 11 p.m. Sunday, April 23 to 5 a.m. Monday, April 24. DETOUR: From northbound I-5 exit at Norwalk Boulevard off-ramp, turn left on Norwalk Boulevard, turn right on Firestone Boulevard and proceed to the northbound I-605 on-ramp; then transition onto northbound I-5.

  • Northbound I-5 will be closed from Carmenita Road to I-605 from 11 p.m. Monday, April 24 to 5 a.m. Tuesday, April 25.

  • Westbound SR-91 to Northbound I-5 Connector closed nightly between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m., Sunday, April 23 and Monday, April 24. DETOUR: Motorists will be directed to continue westbound on SR-91, transition onto northbound I-605, then transition back onto northbound I-5.

  • Northbound I-5 Norwalk Boulevard on-ramp will be closing permanently on Monday, April 24.
DETOUR: From Norwalk Boulevard motorists will be directed to proceed to Imperial Highway and turn left. Continue west on Imperial Highway, turn right on Firestone Boulevard. Proceed on Firestone Boulevard to access the northbound I-605 on-ramp, then transition onto northbound I-5.

As crews work on Imperial Highway, Norwalk Boulevard and Pioneer Boulevard bridges at I-5, one lane in each direction will be closed on each street (at I-5) during the daytime, between 8:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.
