Wi-Fi Reverse Pitch

Wi-Fi on Metrolink Trains

Metrolink is Southern California’s regional passenger rail system, connecting commuters to their careers and opportunities to explore all that Southern California has to offer. Our riders travel on average 35 miles each way, which means they spend approximately 60 minutes on our trains for each trip. So, it’s no surprise that on-board Wi-Fi is our riders’ most-requested amenity. We are determined to provide it quickly and cost-effectively – and in a way that adds value for our passengers.

Metrolink took an important first step in the process to provide Wi-Fi to our riders through a pilot program from November 2019 through March 2020. Metrolink tested different hardware and software working with technology providers to find out how each performed throughout Metrolink’s 538-mile commuter rail system.

Metrolink riders spend on average 61 minutes on our trains per trip, so it’s no surprise Wi-Fi is one of their most-requested amenities. They are looking to make better use of their time while on their trains – and a reliable Wi-Fi connection throughout their trip will help them accomplish that.

We know a traditional procurement approach – issuing an RFP and securing bids for a pre-scripted project delivery – is not the best approach to deliver on our objective to deliver WI-Fi for our passengers. We also know we can harness new technologies on our trains to significantly enhance the rider experience – and we are looking to the private sector for their innovative ideas to do that.

Following the Wi-Fi Reverse pitch event, proposers will have until May 29, 2020 at 2 p.m. PDT to submit their proposals. Metrolink will review the proposals and determine the appropriate next steps which could include proceeding to a sole source agreement or proceeding to an RFP procurement. For specific proposal guidelines click here.

After the Wi-Fi Reverse Pitch proposals are received, they will be reviewed and a determination will be made on moving forward. Check back for more information and updates.

Our riders were invited to take a survey after they used the free Wi-Fi during the pilot. The results are here.
