SAN BERNARDINO – The historic Santa Fe Depot, which played a pivotal role in the development of the Inland Empire, will mark its 100th anniversary with a free public celebration Saturday, July 21, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The depot at 1170 W. 3rd St. is part of the San Bernardino History and Railroad Museum, located just steps from the Metrolink San Bernardino Depot stop.

A centennial monument will be dedicated at 10 a.m. and then the museum will host an array of family fun festivities, including displays of antique rail cars, a circus train and railroad memorabilia, a classic car show and more. Cake will be served, and food trucks will be there.

Rail fans and others can take Metrolink from throughout Southern California to the museum. Metrolink’s unlimited rides fare on Saturday and Sunday is just $10, one of the best travel bargains anywhere. During the week, fares on the Metrolink Los Angeles to San Bernardino Line remain a bargain. On July 1, weekday fares on the line were reduced by 25 percent.

The Santa Fe Depot, with its distinctive Mission Revival Style Architecture, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Many people passed through the Santa Fe depot in the last century when San Bernardino served as the hub of Santa Fe’s Southern California railroad operations. Trains departed frequently for destinations throughout the country.

With the advent of autos, buses and air travel, the station saw a decline in usage. In 1992, the San Bernardino Associated Governments (SANBAG) purchased the historic depot from Santa Fe and secured funds for its restoration. Metrolink and Amtrak trains currently stop at the depot.
