Capital Equipment & Facilities

The Capital Equipment & Facilities group is responsible for Metrolink rolling stock and facilities capital projects which seek to maintain state of good repair, as well as improve reliability, efficiency, and both internal and external customer experience. The Department develops and controls the scope of work, budget, and schedule for each project and manages contractor and consultant staff to ensure successful project completion.

Bombardier HVAC Overhaul – 267 HVAC Units

This project will extend the lifespan of the Bombardier fleet HVAC units by replacing the R22 refrigerant with R407C refrigerant during the overhaul of each unit.

Rotem HVAC Overhaul – 44 Car Sets (88 HVAC units & 44 controller panels)

This project will overhaul the Rotem HVAC fleet to extend its lifespan and enhance reliability. The R22 refrigerant will also be replaced with R407C refrigerant during the project.

Tier 4 Locomotive Procurement – 40 locomotives

The F125 locomotive, built by Progress Rail, is designed to meet Tier 4 EPA requirements by incorporating a low-particulate C175-20 engine fitted with a Diesel Exhaust Catalyst (DEC) to remove NOx gases. A total of 40 locomotives were ordered, delivered, and the project is now in its final closeout phase with all locomotives in service.

Bombardier Railcar Rebuild

The Metrolink Bombardier fleet is approximately 30 years old. This project will refurbish selected Bombardier railcars for improvements in safety, comfort, and maintainability. An additional benefit is extended life of the equipment.

Passenger Seat Enhancement

This project will renew the fabric seat covers on approximately 30 Rotem cars and 10 Bombardier cars. The new vinyl covers are easier to clean than existing fabric ones, allowing for simpler maintenance and an improved customer experience.

Rotem End-Door Improvement Project

This project will modify the end-door system of our Hyundai Rotem fleet of passenger cars to reduce the effort required to open the end-doors. This will better enable passengers and crew to travel between cars within a train set.

Zero Emissions Multiple Unit (ZEMU) Project

The San Bernardino County Transportation Authority (SBCTA) has purchased the first hydrogen-powered train in the United States for use on the Arrow corridor. The unit is currently undergoing testing but is planned to eventually be operated by Metrolink as part of the Arrow service between San Bernardino and Redlands. Moorpark Safety Enhancement

This project paves the Moorpark maintenance yard to increase maintenance tasks that can be performed at the site. An upgraded crew office trailer will also be provided. The new trailer will have increased office spaces and improved restroom facilities. Stormwater drainage improvements will also be included in the construction.

Sand Silo Air Filtration System

The air filtration systems for the two sand silos at the Central Maintenance Facility (CMF) require renewal. This project provides two new filters that will eliminate potential leakage.

Eastern Maintenance Facility Improvement

Most rolling stock maintenance work is done at night at the EMF, so site lighting and adequate crew trailer facilities are of utmost importance. This project provides a new crew trailer with improved restroom facilities. The project will also replace the lights in 160 light poles with new energy-efficient LEDs.

Ground Air System

This project provides improvements to the compressed air system at both the Central Maintenance Facility (CMF) and Eastern Maintenance Facility (EMF). At CMF, two new air compressors will be provided and at EMF, one new compressor is being installed. These air compressors are critical for servicing Metrolink trains with compressed air during maintenance.

Maximizing Mobility: Metrolink Prepares for Olympic Demand

Metrolink is actively preparing for the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games in Los Angeles through its Southern California Optimized Rail Expansion (SCORE) program. With a fleet of 60 locomotives, 57 cab cars, and 201 trailer cars, a primary goal is to maximize equipment availability ahead of the Games. Planned upgrades aim to improve service frequency, reliability, and sustainability to accommodate the surge in ridership. These efforts will not only support the Olympics but also leave a lasting impact on regional transportation across Southern California.
