Metrolink Board votes to lower fares for shorter trips to increase ridership
LOS ANGELES - On Friday, at its regularly-scheduled meeting, the Metrolink Board of Directors voted to decrease fares for trips 20 miles and under. The lower fares will go into effect on July 1, marking the second time in 2016 fares for short-distance trips have been decreased on Metrolink trains. Monthly passholders could save up to $84 a month, totaling more than $1,000 annually.
"Lowering fares for these short trips will make Metrolink more appealing and competitive with other forms of transportation," said Chair of the Metrolink Board of Directors Shawn Nelson, who is also an Orange County supervisor. "We are pleased to offer these discounts to our current passengers and to new riders, as well."
In January, Metrolink lowered fares by introducing a $3 "Station-to-Station" fare pilot program for a period of six months for one-way and roundtrip passes. The pilot program, which ends on June 30, showed significant interest from riders for short-distanced options. The $3 "Station-to-Station" fare pilot was only available for select tickets. Today's board action makes the reduced short-distance fares available to all ticket types, including monthly passholders.
