Los Angeles - Effective immediately, Metrolink will be cancelling special 11 p.m. late night service on its Antelope Valley and Ventura County lines due to low ridership. Late night trains to San Bernardino will continue as part of Metrolink's regular schedule.

"Not enough people are taking advantage of these trains to justify continued operation. It is not a prudent use of tax dollars or in the best interest of air quality to operate an empty train, even though the program's intentions were good," said Metrolink Board Chair Richard Katz.

On March 31, Metrolink began operating late-night trains on the Antelope Valley, San Bernardino and Ventura County lines to provide affordable public transportation options, while removing cars from the roadway to improve air quality. However, since then less than 140 people have taken advantage of this opportunity on the Antelope Valley and Ventura County lines. The San Bernardino late night train is now part of Metrolink's regular schedule and has higher ridership than the special late-night trains.

Antelope Valley and Ventura County line train service is funded by a grant awarded to Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro) by the Mobile Air Pollution Reduction Review Committee.
