Metrolink to offer free rides during Bike to Work Week

Anyone who brings a bike onboard a train rides free May 11-15

LOS ANGELES - In support of Bike to Work Week, Metrolink will offer a free ride to anyone who travels with a bike onboard a train from Monday, May 11 through Friday, May 15.

Riders must accompany their bike for the entire trip. The free ride offer is limited to one person per bike. The agency has a total of 17 Bike Cars, each of which can accommodate 18 bicycles compared to other passenger cars designed to hold three bicycles.

Metrolink has transported more than 900,000 bicyclists since the agency introduced its Bike Cars in July 2011. Historically, Metrolink has offered free rides on Bike to Work Day, but this year is the first time the offer has been extended for an entire week.

Metrolink Bike Cars will be in high demand across the Metrolink system as more cyclists will take the train. If the train cannot accommodate additional bikes, passengers will be asked to take the next train or find alternative means of transportation.

Metro will also be allowing free rides for people with bicycles on Thursday, May 14 for Bike to Work Day. However, for Metrolink riders who ride for free with their bicycles during the other days of the week, a TAP card will be needed when transferring to Metro rail or bus.

National Bike Month, established in 1956, is sponsored by the League of American Bicyclists and celebrated in communities from coast to coast encouraging commuters to ride a bike as an alternative form of travel.
