Metrolink to showcase new safety wrapped passenger car at San Bernardino Railroad Days

Rail enthusiasts will also take Metrolink to and from Los Angeles to complement a train ride powered by a 1927 AT&SF Steam Locomotive 3751

LOS ANGELES - To help celebrate the San Bernardino Railroad Days on April 27 and 28, Metrolink will have its new safety wrapped passenger car on display promoting the message of "Stay Alert, Stay Alive, Stay off the Tracks."

The event is free to the public.

Depicted on the new Metrolink passenger car is the agency's safety mascot SMARTY. The safety wrapped car appearance at the San Bernardino Railroad Days is the first in a series of events throughout Southern California promoting Metrolink's "Summer Safety Focus 2013" awareness campaign. Metrolink staff will be available to discuss and distribute literature encouraging people to "Be Track Smart" and minimize distractions around tracks and stations.

"This is a tremendous event highlighting the past, present and future of the railroad, but conveying the importance of safety near railroad tracks is critical," said Metrolink Board of Directors Chair and San Bernardino Mayor Pat Morris. "For me, and for the City of San Bernardino, this is one of the best weekends of the year. People who may not be regular Metrolink riders have the opportunity to visit the historic Santa Fe Depot and experience what the rail industry has offered for nearly 200 years to this region.

"Metrolink has been an outstanding partner in making the San Bernardino Railroad Days an annual success," he added.

Safety Car paper trains will be distributed, while special safety brochures will also be available.

The event will feature food, music, train memorabilia and family activities beginning at 9 a.m. each day. The festivities will conclude at 5 p.m. Saturday and at 3 p.m. on Sunday. The San Bernardino History and Railroad Museum will also be open to the public on both days. Admission is free. The San Bernardino Metrolink Station and the Santa Fe Depot are located at 1170 W. Third Street, San Bernardino.

A special train consist of six private passenger cars will be powered by the 1927 AT&SF Steam Locomotive 3751 and supported by a Metrolink locomotive. The train will depart Los Angeles Union Station at 10 a.m. Saturday and arrive in San Bernardino at approximately 11:30 a.m.

The train will be on display at the depot overnight and will return to Los Angeles, leaving San Bernardino at 3 p.m. Sunday. Tickets for the special train ride are sold out.
