Behind the Scenes, Metrolink Works to Keep System, Customers Safe

Metrolink Rail Traffic Controller Peter Garcia mans his train dispatching station at Metrolink’s Dispatch Operations Center in Pomona.

Every day, Metrolink manages and maintains a rail right-of-way that spans hundreds of miles across six counties, an immense network that requires constant vigilance and strategic protection. To curb copper wire theft and vandalism on our system, our operations; program delivery; and safety, security and compliance teams have taken decisive steps to fortify our infrastructure. These include installing fencing, adding security cameras, welding shut or burying utility vaults, and relocating wires to less visible areas, including painting them to blend in with the rails. Collectively, these measures are designed to deter criminal activity, preserve equipment, and keep service running safely and on time.

Just as critical as the physical upgrades are the actions of the people who protect our system every day. On June 8, Metrolink Rail Traffic Controller Peter Garcia demonstrated this vigilance in action. The night before, vandals had struck the Ninth Street control point, located on the Riverside Line in Los Angeles, stealing copper wiring and damaging key infrastructure. When a suspicious vehicle returned to the area during Peter’s shift, he recognized it immediately from surveillance footage shared by the signal team. Acting without delay, he notified law enforcement, who quickly responded and apprehended the suspect at the scene. Peter’s decisive response not only prevented additional damage, but underscored the essential role our employees play in safeguarding Metrolink’s network.
