New High-Security Fencing Helping Keep Vandals at Bay

Fencing has been installed around electrical poles and signal houses to deter copper-wire theft and vandalism.

In a decisive and intentional move to combat right-of-way vandalism, Metrolink operations staff, in partnership with our contractors Herzog and Domestic Rail Solutions, have installed high-security fencing around key track and signal infrastructure assets. Projects were recently completed at two critical locations on Metrolink’s Riverside Line in the City of Los Angeles between LA Union Station and Union Pacific-owned territory.

These sites were chosen because both have experienced multiple incidents of vandalism, including copper-wire theft – which has become a significant cause of train delays – and damage to power and electricity poles. Despite existing security measures, the frequency and severity of damage at these locations necessitated the additional protections.

These measures are part of Metrolink’s broader strategy to safeguard track and signal equipment and ensure uninterrupted service for passengers. As destruction of property along our right of way remains a widespread issue, we continue to explore solutions to deter and mitigate vandalism and secure our infrastructure systemwide.
