The Southern California community and rail enthusiasts alike came to ride the new ZEMU on its inaugural day of service.
On Saturday, Sept. 13, Metrolink, in partnership with the San Bernardino County Transportation Authority (SBCTA), officially launched North America’s first hybrid hydrogen-and-battery-powered passenger train, the Zero-Emission Multiple Unit (ZEMU). The ZEMU entered regular rotation on our Arrow service between San Bernardino and Redlands, marking a historic milestone in passenger rail. To celebrate the debut, all Arrow rides were free throughout the day, giving riders a chance to be among the first to experience this cutting-edge technology.
ZEMU is a groundbreaking advancement in clean rail, offering a zero-emission alternative to diesel power. Its on-board fuel cell uses hydrogen and oxygen to generate electricity, with only water vapor released as a byproduct. For Inland Empire communities that face some of the nation’s toughest air quality challenges due to the county’s geographical position, ZEMU represents a meaningful step forward in delivering healthier, more sustainable transit options.
Excited passengers enjoy ZEMU’s first trip from San Bernardino to Redlands.
The first official ZEMU trip departed the San Bernardino-Downtown Station at 10:32 a.m. Metrolink and SBCTA staff greeted riders, answered questions and distributed ZEMU-themed giveaways, including a limited-edition cardboard train, to add to the celebratory atmosphere.
Saturday’s launch was the result of more than a decade of planning and partnership. The arrival of ZEMU is more than the introduction of a new rail vehicle; it marks the next step in a collective journey toward zero-emissions rail, one that will span multiple technologies and innovations as Metrolink advances toward a cleaner, healthier and more sustainable future for Southern California and beyond.
