Why is Metrolink offering free rides on Earth Day?
To celebrate Earth Day, Metrolink is offering free rides all day on Tuesday, April 22, to encourage people to try the train instead of driving. Riding the train helps reduce pollution and traffic—and it's a more relaxing and convenient way to get around.
Do I need a ticket to ride for free?
Nope! Just hop on the train. No ticket or pass is needed to ride free on Earth Day.

How do I plan my Metrolink trip?
Go to MetrolinkTrains.com, choose your starting and ending stations, and click "Get Schedule" to see departure and arrival times.
What if I already paid for a monthly or weekly pass? Will I get a refund?
No, prepaid pass holders will not be reimbursed for the free fare day.
Can I still buy a ticket or pass on Earth Day?
Yes, ticket machines will be working, but there's no need to buy a ticket on Earth Day. Take advantage of the free ride and buy your pass the next time you ride.
Will there be seats guaranteed?
Seats are first come, first served. Trains may be more crowded than usual, so we recommend arriving early. Some passengers may need to stand.
Can I bring my bike?
Yes, but bike space is limited. Regular train cars hold up to 3 bikes, while bike cars can hold up to 11. Arrive early to better your chances of finding space.
Can I transfer to buses or other trains with my free ride?
Yes, you can ride free on Metrolink all day. Many local buses and trains—including Metro (Los Angeles), Omnitrans (San Bernardino), and transit agencies in Orange, Riverside, and Ventura counties—are also offering free rides on Earth Day. Learn more about free Transit Connections.
Note: Free transfers do not apply to Amtrak Pacific Surfliner trains.
Can I ride Amtrak Pacific Surfliner trains for free on Earth Day?
No. Free Earth Day rides apply only to Metrolink trains and select local transit agencies. Please check with Amtrak for their Earth Day plans.
If you’re a Metrolink monthly pass holder, Rail 2 Rail/codeshare access on Pacific Surfliner still applies.
