FOR DESIGN ENTRIES:

The deadline for design entries has passed. Stay tuned for ways to attend the Sustainable Fashion Show Competition on our social channels.

WHO MAY ENTER:

Students over the age of 16 years old who live and attend a school in a county served by Metrolink (Los Angeles, Orange, San Bernardino, Riverside, Ventura, and San Diego counties).

DESIGN CRITERIA:

The focus of this competition is to raise awareness and encourage others to recycle or upcycle items that otherwise would be destined for the landfill. All design entries must be made from post-consumer (not bought new to create the design), post-industrial recyclable materials.

Categories:

  • Designs created with recycled textiles such as swatches, end-of-rolls, sample yardage, unsold clothing, clothing samples, or secondhand clothing.
  • Designs created with recycled materials such as coffee filters, canvas or burlap bags, bubble wrap, product packaging, magazines, etc.

All entries must be constructed 100% from recyclable or upcycled materials with the exception of the materials used for construction and/or attachment. For example, designers may purchase and use thread, glue, tape, Velcro, fusible bonding, etc. to construct the garment and/or attach items. However, these things should be used sparingly, should not be seen or hardly seen when worn, and should not distract from the recyclable design aspect of the competition.

You may use previously owned garments and materials purchased from thrift stores. However, all created designs must be reconstructed (i.e. sewing trim or attaching items to a garment without changing its original structure will not be accepted).

Submissions must be original and must be the work of the submitting participant. The outfit must be wearable, either by the designer or a model provided by the participant, and all materials used must be safe.

HOW TO ENTER:

  • Design entries must be received no later than Sunday, March 10, 2024, at 10:00 p.m. PST at [email protected].
  • Designs must be submitted on the 8.5x11 provided Design Drawing Submission Form. No oversized drawings will be accepted.
  • Submissions must include a written description (no more than 500 words) of the concept, inspiration, and proposed materials to be used in the final design on the provided Design Description Form.
  • At the time of submission, complete and sign an Image Release Form and a Consent to Participate for Minors, if applicable.
  • Participants may submit multiple entries, but they must be submitted separately. Each entry will be judged separately.
  • Selected entries must complete their final fashion designs by April 15, 2024.
