This property was the first three-story building in Los Angeles. It was built in 1870 by Pío Pico, the last Mexican Governor of Alta California, to serve as a luxury hotel. The building sits across Olvera Street and is listed as a California Historical Landmark and a National Historic Landmark.

In its heyday, it was known as one of the most opulent hotels in Southern California (with details considered very extravagant at the time, such as 80 bedrooms, 21 parlors, and a French restaurant arranged around a central courtyard with running fountain and an on-site aviary with “exotic” birds).

Today, the building is used for special events, exhibitions, and filming. It has been featured in episodes of Star Trek: The Next Generation, The Mentalist and the new Perry Mason, among other movies and television shows.
