Celebrate the Pacific Ocean and all of its wonders at the Ocean Institute in Dana Point. Whether you want to learn about marine biology, maritime history, or what’s under the sea, this non-profit dedicated to preserving the natural environment is a great place to visit.

On weekends at low tide, their experts host Tide Pool Hikes, which reveal the sea stars, anemones, crabs and many other inhabitants. This activity is terrific for families and fun for all ages. There are also tours focusing on native plants or the geology of the region. Recently, they have even introduced virtual programming with Virtual Field Trips for various grade levels. If you prefer to visit, inside the Institute, you can learn about Moon Jellies, and experience marine life in their Touch Tanks, along with other hands-on experiences.

The “Sea Explorer” is the Ocean Institute’s very own research vessel and takes visitors out for ocean tours where you’ll likely see whales, dolphins, and sea lions right off the coast of Dana Point Harbor. The Institute is also home to “The Spirit of Dana Point,” a replica of a 1770s schooner, affectionately known as a Tall Ship, constructed from plans purchased from the Smithsonian and built with loving homage to the past. Currently being restored, the Spirit has been a beloved school field trip location for many years, and hopefully will be again some day.

Be sure to consult their website and see which events require tickets and advanced reservation before heading out. The Institute also hosts private events, like birthday parties, and runs Summer Camps, too.
