Free rides, presented by Visit Ventura, provide access to Metrolink’s full system and the Arrow service, offering a convenient alternative to driving

LOS ANGELES – With California gas prices averaging more than $6 per gallon, Metrolink, Southern California’s regional passenger rail provider, is inviting those looking for relief at the pump to leave the car behind and ride for free on Wednesday, Oct. 7, in recognition of California Clean Air Day. Throughout the day, travelers can board at any station – no ticket needed – and enjoy unlimited access to Metrolink’s 545-mile, six-county system, including the Arrow service between San Bernardino and Redlands.

According to AAA, the statewide average for a gallon of regular gasoline reached $6.39 this week, up more than $1.70 from the same time last year. On California Clean Air Day, Metrolink is encouraging drivers to take advantage of free rides, presented by Visit Ventura, to give their wallets a break and discover the ease and convenience of using regional public transportation. Many local transit providers are also waiving fares on Oct. 7, preserving seamless, no-cost connections with LA Metro, OC Bus, Riverside Transit Agency, Omnitrans, Victor Valley Transit Authority, Mountain Transit, and the Ventura County Transportation Commission, among others.

“With families across Southern California feeling the impact of higher gas prices, California Clean Air Day is an especially timely opportunity to experience all that public transportation can offer,” Metrolink Board Chair Doug Chaffee said. “Leaving the car at home for even one trip can mean money saved at the pump, fewer vehicles on our roads and cleaner air for the communities we serve. We hope a free ride on Metrolink inspires more people to see where the train can take them.”

California Clean Air Day is an annual statewide initiative that encourages Californians to take simple actions that can collectively improve air quality. Transportation remains a major source of greenhouse gas emissions in California, and Metrolink is urging drivers to consider more sustainable and cost-effective alternatives. The agency's locomotive fleet operates on renewable fuel made from recycled natural fats and vegetable oils, reducing harmful emissions compared with conventional diesel fuel, and new technologies, like Arrow’s Zero-Emission Multiple Unit, are moving the industry toward an even greener future. Riders can use Metrolink's Personal Impact Calculator to see how choosing the train can reduce their environmental footprint, ease traffic congestion and translate to real cost savings.

California Clean Air Day is one of three Board-approved free-ride promotions throughout the year. Metrolink also waives fares on Transit Equity Day and Earth Day, celebrated annually on Feb. 4 and April 22, respectively.
