As Southern California welcomes millions of visitors for the FIFA World Cup 2026™, with more on the horizon for the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games, Metrolink continues to invest in one of the most important aspects of transit operations: emergency preparedness. Working alongside public safety agencies, contractors and regional partners, Metrolink regularly conducts exercises designed to strengthen coordination, refine response procedures and ensure readiness for a wide range of incidents. These efforts support major event planning and the safe, reliable everyday operation of our railroad.
On May 13, our Safety, Security and Compliance Department led the agency's annual full-scale simulation at Los Angeles Union Station. Required under federal regulations, these exercises allow passenger railroads and first responders to practice emergency response procedures in realistic conditions. This year’s scenario focused on an active shooter and hostage situation aboard a train approaching LA Union Station, emphasizing communication, law enforcement response, threat neutralization and scene security.
Metrolink partnered with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, Metrolink Bureau, and welcomed participation and observation from agency partners, including Amtrak Police, the Los Angeles Police Department, LA Metro, train crew operator Alstom and security contractor Allied Universal. Participants also received hands-on training and familiarization with Metrolink equipment and onboard emergency features, strengthening coordination and operational readiness across organizations.
While the ability to practice in real-world settings is critical, preparedness extends beyond field response. In June, Metrolink conducted two crisis communications tabletop exercises focused on information sharing, response protocols and decision-making during complex incidents. The sessions explored multiple rail safety scenarios, including two tied to the ongoing World Cup.
Together, these proactive efforts help ensure Metrolink officials are ready to respond effectively when incidents occur, while continuously improving the plans, partnerships and procedures that guide our response.
