ACEC National Recognition Award

I'm proud to share that OCTA and Metrolink, in collaboration with our contracted consultant HDR, were honored with a National Recognition Award at the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) 2024 Engineering Excellence Awards (EEA) event for our exemplary work on the $21.7 million Cyprus Shores Emergency Stabilization Project.

This prestigious national distinction celebrates projects that showcase exceptional engineering excellence on a national scale, and we are proud to have our efforts recognized at this level.

In response to a landslide in the Cypress Shores area of San Clemente in 2021, OCTA, Metrolink and HDR, worked together to stabilize the railroad right of way and mitigate the risk of future hillside movement. Thanks to the leadership and funding from OCTA, our project team installed more than 20,000 tons of riprap along the ocean-facing side of the track. Additionally, the project team installed 110 concrete grade beams accompanied by 220 tiebacks spanning a length of 133 feet, effectively securing the slope, and allowing for the safe reopening of the rail line.

The significance of the Cyprus Shores Emergency Stabilization Project extends beyond mere infrastructure repair; it showcases the collaborative spirit, coupled with innovative engineering solutions, that has underscored our response to multiple challenges along this stretch of coastal rail near San Clemente in recent years.

At last month’s ACEC Awards Banquet in Huntington Beach, Metrolink Chief of Program Delivery Justin Fornelli and OCTA Executive Director of Capital Programs Jim Beil jointly accepted the award. The national recognition will occur at the EEA Gala on May 15 in Washington, D.C. This distinction is a testament to the dedication, expertise and teamwork demonstrated by everyone involved in the project.

Congratulations to all those who contributed to the Cyprus Shores Emergency Stabilization Project. Your hard work, ingenuity and commitment to excellence have safeguarded critical infrastructure and contributed to the resilience of our communities and the broader economy.
