Arrow service runs along nine miles of track between San Bernardino and Redlands.
When the Arrow service—an extension of Metrolink’s San Bernardino Line linking to the City of Redlands—launched in October 2022, the nine-mile corridor presented new and unique challenges for Metrolink’s safety, security and compliance team. To ensure safe, reliable operation for customers and community members, Metrolink, in partnership with the San Bernardino County Transportation Authority (SBCTA), engaged the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department (SBCSD) to establish a law enforcement team focused exclusively on the Arrow corridor.
Within six months, the SBCSD team had made significant strides, employing targeted enforcement strategies to address issues like fare evasion, disruptive onboard behavior and individuals trespassing along the rail right of way. In the two years since SBCSD assumed the role, the Arrow service has seen a 66% reduction across all trackable safety metrics, which also include system strikes and fires along the right of way. Their hands-on approach has helped stabilize and safeguard Arrow operations, while keeping bystanders out of harm’s way and improving peace of mind across the entire route.
Much of this success is thanks to the leadership of Sgt. David Page, who oversaw the six-person unit during its first two years. Even without prior experience in rail operations, Sgt. Page guided his team with focus and integrity, helping establish a strong safety culture from day one. Last month, Sgt. Page was promoted to the rank of lieutenant and began a new assignment within the department.
Sgt. Robert Ripley has since stepped into the unit’s sergeant role and is already embracing the unique responsibilities that come with protecting a busy passenger rail corridor. He brings a fresh perspective and a deep commitment to continuing the important work started by his predecessor. We’re proud of what this partnership has achieved and look forward to building on that foundation as we work together to keep Arrow service safe, secure and dependable for years to come.
