The Woman's Building, established in 1973 by Judy Chicago, Sheila de Bretteville, and Arlene Raven, served as a pioneering center for women artists. It provided a space for women of diverse backgrounds and sexualities to come together in solidarity, challenging traditional patriarchal norms.

Initially home to the Feminist Studio Workshop, the building quickly became a hub for feminist activism within the art world, offering programs and activities to support women's artistic endeavors. Over the years, it housed various feminist organizations, including the National Organization for Women (NOW) and the Sisterhood Bookstore, earning recognition as a "feminist mecca" by the Los Angeles Times.

In 2018, the Los Angeles City Council declared the Woman's Building a Historic-Cultural Monument, ensuring its protection against future development and preserving its authentic legacy. Throughout its existence, spanning eighteen years, the Woman's Building provided a safe and experimental space for women worldwide to explore feminist theory through art, making significant strides in challenging the misogyny prevalent in society and the arts.
