In 1932, artist David Alfaro Siqueiros came to Los Angeles to teach at the Chouinard Art Institute following his expulsion from Mexico for radical political militancy.

While he was in Los Angeles, he finished three murals, including América Tropical, which is known as the most significant of his street work—an 80x18 foot mural painted on the second-story exterior wall of the Italian Hall on Olvera Street.

The title of this illustrious piece translates to "Tropical America: Oppressed and Destroyed by Imperialism" and is meant to signify a powerful political statement on U.S. Imperialism in Latin America.

América Tropical was the first large-scale mural in the United States that created a public space by being painted on an ordinary exterior wall. This work also established "Mexican Muralism,” a tradition that continues today in Mexico and is said to have inspired the Chicano art movement in the U.S.
