Avila Adobe

In the heart of Olvera Street sits the Avila Adobe. It was built by Francisco Ávila, a wealthy cattle rancher, back in 1818. It is known as the oldest standing residence in Los Angeles.
The landmark is free and open to the public to visit daily as part of the paseo of historic Olvera Street in the Los Angeles Plaza Historic District.
The building itself is a California Historical Landmark sitting in this district which is listed both on the National Register of Historic Places and as a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument.
In its heyday, the structure served as a social gathering space, with spacious rooms easy to host friends, family, and travelers coming from the east in what was known as “Alta California.”
Wartime and earthquakes damaged the structure over the years, but it and the rest of this plaza were restored in the 20th century from being an area that was a part of Skid Row into a modern Latin-American cultural center.
Today, it’s a historic house museum with seven rooms, depicting the California lifestyle of the 1840s that’s today known as the city of Los Angeles.
