Mission San Luis Rey de Francia
Former Spanish mission Mission San Luis Rey de Francia was founded on June 13, 1798 by Father Lasuén as the eighteenth mission. Today, it remains in Oceanside as a destination visitors can learn the rich stories of California mission history. This mission was named after St. Louis IX who was King of France and patron of the Secular Franciscan Order.
It’s located between Mission San Diego de Alcalá and Mission San Juan Capistrano, atop a hill overlooking a scenic valley. Mission San Luis Rey de Francia has been known to be one of the most prosperous missions, and is the largest in California. In fact, it holds the title “King of the Missions,” due to its expansiveness and architectural beauty.
The peaceful and inspirational surroundings of Oceanside complement its tranquil atmosphere for self-reflection. Visitors can check out the site’s modern museum or self-guided tours, as well as its gift shop, Franciscan Retreat Center, cemetery picnic facilities, and sunken garden.
