Metrolink trains are bike-friendly year-round, offering designated bike storage areas on all train cars. Please note: bike spaces are available on a first-come, first-served basis. When space fills up, you may need to wait for the next train, so plan ahead and arrive early.

Free Rides for California Clean Air Day

Metrolink is celebrating California Clean Air Day on Wednesday, October 7, 2026, by offering free rides on all Metrolink and Arrow trains, no ticket required.

 

How It Works

1. On Wednesday, October 7, 2026, board any Metrolink or Arrow train—no ticket needed.

2. Ride as many times as you like for free that day.

3. Plan your trip ahead using our online trip planner or schedules.

 

Transfer for Free

In addition to Metrolink and Arrow trains being free on California Clean Air Day, the following connecting transit operators also offer free rides on Wednesday, October 7:

  • LA Metro (bus and rail)
  • San Bernardino County transit (including Omnitrans buses)
  • Ventura County transit
  • Riverside County’s Riverside Transit buses
  • Orange County transit, including OC Bus

Frequently Asked Questions

Metrolink’s free ride days are special days throughout the year when anyone can ride any Metrolink or Arrow train for free. They’re designed to help new and returning riders try Metrolink train service for work, school, or fun – no commitment required.

Metrolink offers free rides on select promotional days, including:

  • Transit Equity Day – February 4th
  • Earth Day – April 22nd
  • Bike Day – Thursday of Bike to Work Week, applies to bike riders only
  • California Clean Air Day – first Wednesday of October

Each free ride day may have slightly different guidelines, but all are meant to make trying the train easy and accessible.

No. On Free Ride Days, you do not need a ticket, pass, or mobile app. Just show up at the station, board the train, and ride.

Yes. Free rides are valid all day on the designated Free Ride Day, on all Metrolink and Arrow trains.

Yes. Metrolink Free Ride Days apply to both Metrolink and Arrow trains. You can ride Arrow at no cost on Free Ride Days, just like any other Metrolink service.

In limited cases, riders may be able to submit a refund request online if they activated a ticket unnecessarily.

On some Free Ride Days, connecting bus and rail services in Southern California also offer free rides. Participation varies by day and by agency. If the transit operator is not participating in the free ride day, be prepared to pay to board that service.

Free transfers do not apply to Amtrak Pacific Surfliner trains. Always check with the connecting transit agency for details.

No. Free Ride Days apply only to Metrolink and Arrow trains. Amtrak Pacific Surfliner fares, bike policies, and reservations still apply.

Seating on Metrolink and Arrow trains is always first-come, first-served. Trains may be busier than usual on Free Ride Days, and standing may be required. Arriving early is recommended.

Bike Day Additional Frequently Asked Questions

Bike Day is held on Thursday during National Bike to Work Week and celebrates biking and sustainable travel. Free rides on Bike Day are only available if you bring a bicycle onboard.

Eligible:

  • Standard single-rider bicycles
  • Folding bikes (stored properly)
  • Electric bikes that meet size and weight limits

Not eligible:

  • Gas-powered bikes or scooters
  • Mopeds
  • Tandem or three-wheeled bikes
  • Segways (unless used as a mobility device)

No. Scooters and most motorized devices are not valid for the Bike Day free ride, but they are permitted mobility devices used by riders with disabilities.

Bikes must be placed in the designated bike area inside the train. They may not block aisles, doors, or emergency exits. Conductors may ask you to move to another car if space is limited.
